Inner Mongolia Shengle International Ecological Demonstration Plot

“Inner Mongolia Shengle International Ecological Demonstration Plot” is an ecological restoration and protection project in Horinger, Inner Mongolia initiated by Lao Niu Foundation together with The Nature Conservancy (TNC), China Green Carbon Foundation, and Inner Mongolia Forestry Department; it will invest hundreds of millions of RMB and take decades to conduct exploration and demonstration of ecological restoration in four aspects including climate adaptation, vegetation restoration, water resources management, and green industry. At present, the project has turned nearly 40,000 mu of barren mountains to green land with more than 3 million trees like Pinus sylvestris var. mongolica and Picea asperata Mast. having survival rate of over 92%; the biodiversity has increased from less than 30 species to more than 70 species, and beasts like hares, foxes, and badgers and birds like tadorna ferruginea and Amur falcon have reappeared, benefitting more than 10,000 people of 2,690 households in 13 administrative villages of four townships. It is expected in the next 30 years that 220,000 tons of carbon dioxide will be fixedly absorbed, of which 160,000 tons have already been subscribed by Warner Disney; during the period of conservation, the average household income is expected to increase by 9,329 RMB per year through sustainable “PPP” model jointly explored with communities through under-forest breeding, rain fed agriculture, sustainable grazing management and cooperative. The project takes the way of forestation for carbon sequestration increase to consolidate the important ecological security barriers in the north of China and create a livable environment with “bluer sky, greener mountains, and cleaner water”. “Inner Mongolia Shengle International Ecological Demonstration Plot” has been awarded the 8th China Charity Award of “The Most Influential Project” by the Ministry of Civil Affairs, and become the first carbon sequestration project under the registration of UN Framework Convention on Climate Change (UNFCCC) in Inner Mongolia. It has also obtained Gold certification of Climate, Community and Biodiversity (CCB) Standards, selected as an outstanding case of the “Solution Database” of the United Nations Development Program (UNDP).
